Which foods can worsen osteoarthritis – and which can help relieve it

When your joints protest with every step, it has much more to do with your everyday life than with 'old joints.' Osteoarthritis is not a fate you simply have to accept – many symptoms can be noticeably alleviated through targeted nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.

Our expert at TRINICUM, Mag. Axel Dinse, MSc., explains:

"Those who eat consciously can relieve their body – especially the joints benefit from an anti-inflammatory diet."

These foods can worsen osteoarthritis

There is no strict list of forbidden foods, but some foods act like heavy fuel in the engine: they promote inflammation and can worsen symptoms.

Red meat and sausages

Often contain substances that promote inflammation. Many affected people notice that their joints react more sluggishly after a heavy meat dish.

Sugar and white flour products

Lemonade, sweets, or white bread cause blood sugar to rollercoaster and promote silent inflammation.

Fried and highly processed foods

Fast food, chips, or ready meals contain unhealthy fats that additionally burden the body.

Alcohol and heavily salted snacks

Burden the metabolism and can irritate the joints.

Mag. Axel Dinse, MSc. adds: "It's not about forbidding everything. Rather, we should learn to choose consciously and not unnecessarily burden the body."

Foods that reduce inflammation

On the other hand, there are many foods that slow down inflammation and are good for the joints:

Vegetables & fruits

Broccoli, spinach, bell peppers, or berries provide antioxidants, vitamins, and plant compounds that trap free radicals and reduce inflammation.

Fatty fish & omega-3 fatty acids

Salmon, herring, or mackerel have anti-inflammatory effects. Walnuts or linseed oil are also helpful.

Nuts, seeds & healthy oils

They provide unsaturated fatty acids that support metabolism and counteract inflammation.

Spices like turmeric or ginger

Even a small portion can reduce inflammatory processes and at the same time add flavor to the plate.

Nutrition as part of a healthy lifestyle

As our expert at TRINICUM, Mag. Axel Dinse, MSc., emphasizes:

"Nutrition alone is not a cure-all – but it can significantly reduce the body's propensity for inflammation and increase quality of life."

Osteoarthritis is complex – nutrition is only one lever. Exercise, targeted training, and a healthy lifestyle also play a central role.
