Frequently asked questions about neurology

What is neurology? Are migraines curable? Key questions and answers about the field of neurology can be found here.

What is neurology?

Neurology is the branch of medicine that deals with the nervous system and its diseases as well as adverse effects. Issues concerning the brain, spinal cord, nerves and the connection to the muscles are part of the nervous system and are therefore treated by neurologists.

What happens during a neurological examination?

During your first visit to the neurology department at Trinicum, you will have a detailed initial consultation with Dr Bernadette Calabek-Wohinz or Dr Isabel Hoffmann-Wissenwasser. Both current symptoms and a medical history are recorded. Possible neurological examinations are then performed or scheduled to identify possible impaired nervous systems. Depending on the symptoms, further tests may be carried out, such as blood tests or an abdominal ultrasound. Dr Calabek-Wohinz or Dr Hoffmann-Wissenwasser will discuss all the medical steps with you in person.

Do I need a referral for a neurology appointment?

You can come see us at the Neurology department at Trinicum both with and without a referral.

What are common neurological disorders?

The most common neurological disorders include headaches and migraines. Cerebrovascular disease, various muscle diseases, Alzheimer`s disease, dementia, Parkinson`s disease, multiple sclerosis, and carpal tunnel syndrome are also common.

What is the difference between a migraine and a headache?

While headaches are more likely to be a one-time occurrence, migraines tend to occur more frequently. Migraines can occur at vastly different intervals. But headaches may also occur more frequently.

Migraines are also often accompanied by other symptoms, including sensitivity to light and sound, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, trouble concentrating, and fatigue. These kinds of symptoms may occur several hours to days before the migraine.

Our neurology specialist can make a precise distinction between headaches and migraines. If you are suffering from frequent headaches and very severe acute headaches, we advise you to consult a doctor as soon as possible.

What helps with an acute migraine?

If you have an acute-onset migraine, we recommend that you protect yourself from sensory overload by staying in a quiet and dark room. You should also avoid using any artificial light sources, for example, from a TV screen or mobile phone screen. Preventive measures can be taken if migraines occur more frequently. We look forward to discussing this further with you in person at Trinicum.

What helps with acute headaches?

For headaches, a soothing herbal tea can help you keep calm and relax. Lemon balm and small-leaved lime in particular have a soothing and relaxing effect on the body. For this, we recommend a 1:1 herbal mixture with one teaspoon of herbs per cup from both plants. For acute headaches, you can drink a cup of the herbal tea three times a day for several days.

Immediate relief for acute headaches: using your thumb and index finger, massage the highest point at the top of your head in a circular motion for one minute. You can work your way forward massaging between your thumb and index finger. If you feel pain in a specific spot, massage right there until the source of the pain disappears. You can also massage the spot where the pain originates from in light circular motions.

Are migraines curable?

A migraine is a so-called chronic disease and cannot be cured. Chronic diseases are recurring illnesses, which cannot be completely cured in most cases. However, with targeted therapy, symptoms can be significantly reduced, as can the frequency of migraine attacks. Targeted therapy can provide long-lasting relief for chronic diseases.

What is a functional neurological disorder?

Functional neurological disorders are neurological symptoms that are not caused by organ damage. Functional neurological disorders, or FND, include strokes and epilepsy.

FNDs may also include symptoms that are not directly related to the nervous system, such as gastrointestinal disorders that cannot be attributed to a pre-existing condition.
