Music Therapy
Dr. Jisun Kim has gained professional experience as a music therapist in various fields – in geriatrics with a focus on dementia in Amstetten (nursing and care center), in psychiatry and psychotherapeutic medicine at the Hietzing Clinic, as well as in the palliative and intensive care unit at the University Hospital AKH Vienna/Med Uni Vienna.
In Austria, music therapy is legally recognized and is used as an independent, creative form of therapy to treat people with various physical, psychological, and social impairments. Music serves as a medium to promote contact with oneself and others and to strengthen one’s own expression. The therapy is individually tailored to the strengths and development possibilities of the patients, without requiring any prior musical knowledge. Various methods such as active music-making, listening to music, and neuromusic therapy support relaxation, pain management, and the improvement of neurocognitive functions. The goal is to achieve a deeper understanding of emotions and relationship patterns through music and to integrate these into everyday life.
Methods of music therapy in pain therapy include:
- Reduction of pain perception and intensity
- Emotional support in pain management
- Promotion of relaxation and emotional well-being
Active Music Therapy:
- Patients actively make music (singing, playing instruments)
- Promotion of physical movement and creative expression possibilities
Receptive Music Therapy:
- Patients listen to specifically selected music
- Has a relaxing and stress-reducing effect
Neuromusic Therapy:
- Application of neurological principles for pain treatment
- Exercises to improve neurocognitive functions
- Music therapy thus offers a diverse and holistic way to support people in different life situations and to open up new ways of expression
