Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

A. GENERAL

1. What is a rapid antigen test?

With a rapid antigen test, viral antigens from SARS-CoV-19 can be detected within 15 minutes.

2. What is the difference between a PCR test, rapid antigen test and an antibody test?

Both PCR and antibody tests can detect a current (active) SARS-CoV-19 infection. In the case of a rapid antigen test, only the proteins or the protein envelope of the genome are detected; with PCR tests the genome itself is detected.
Antigen tests are suitable for finding so-called superspreaders. Superspreaders are people with a high viral load of coronavirus. In these cases, the antigen tests show a high level of sensitivity. For people with a lower viral load, e.g. at the beginning or final stages of an infection, they are less efficient at detecting the virus. This is why the PCR test is considered the gold standard and is better suited in suspected cases, so as to rule out an infection even in the early or late stages of illness. A PCR test must always be carried out following a positive rapid antigen test, in order to confirm a coronavirus infection.
Antibody tests, however, indicate a previous infection or the effectiveness of a vaccine and show whether the body has already developed antibodies against the virus.

3. Who may use rapid antigen tests?

Certain minimally invasive antigen tests are now also approved for self-administration and can now also be carried out both by medical professionals and by oneself. You can find more information on the Ministry of Health’s website at https://www.basg.gv.at/en/medical-devices/covid-19.
It is especially important for non-professionals to strictly follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Since these are often complicated, we always work to provide easy-to-understand instructions for all the tests that we offer.

4. What sample variants are available for rapid antigen tests?

There are various ways to take samples, for example, swabbing the throat, swabbing the rear of the nasal cavity or swabbing the front of the nasal cavity. There are now also spit or “lollipop” tests.

Important: Not every test is approved for use with all types of sample.

5. What should I do in the case of a positive result?

In the case of a positive test result you must immediately contact your regional health hotline.
The health hotline in Austria: 1450.

B. LEPU

9. Has the LEPU antigen test been approved for self-use?

The LEPU Medical SARS-CoV-2 Antigen Rapid Test is approved for self-use. As an independent body, the Paul Ehrlich Institute (PEI) has confirmed the reliability (sensitivity and specificity) of the rapid antigen test.
Private individuals and company employees can carry out the antigen self-test by swabbing the front of the nasal cavity (= anterior nasal). Medical staff are no longer required to take the swabs. You can find a video guide here.

10. Where do I find the buffer solution for the Lepu rapid antigen test?

There are two buffer solutions in each Lepu rapid antigen test box. These are often found in between the tests or underneath them.

11. Where do I find the swabbing sticks for the Lepu rapid antigen test?

The swabbing sticks will be delivered in the outer box.

12. How long does the Lepu rapid antigen test last?

The rapid antigen test lasts for about 1 year after production. The use by date is marked on the box.

13. How long does the Lepu buffer solution last after being opened?

According to the manufacturer`s information, the buffer solution should be used within a month.

14. Can I order extra buffer solution?

No, it is not possible to order extra buffer solution.

15. How should the Lepu rapid antigen tests be stored?

The product should be stored in a dry place, away from sunlight and at temperatures between 4°C and 30°C.

16. Does the LEPU antigen test also detect the new virus mutations?

According to information from the manufacturer there is theoretically no problem in detecting the current virus mutations: B.1.1.7 (British) and B.1.351 (South African), since the variation occurs in the S protein and the test looks for the N protein, which is located in the core and less prone to mutation.
