Questions about the PCR test

What is a PCR test?

PCR stands for polymerase chain reaction. During this process, the DNA obtained from a swab is amplified. This means that even the smallest virus particles in the body can be detected and infections can be identified at an early stage.

We carry out the PCR test using a throat swab (the gold standard). This is currently the surest and most reliable test method of diagnosing an infection at the early stages.

When is a PCR test the best option?

The PCR test is suitable for detecting an existing infection. A PCR test provides no information about any previous COVID-19 episodes.

Is the PCR test painful?

When done professionally, a nose and throat swab is not painful. However, the swab must be inserted deep into the nose/throat for the test result to be accurate. Having the sample taken is somewhat uncomfortable and as such, in accordance with the Austrian Epidemics Act, we ensure that this is carried out by doctors, qualified medical personnel or other professionals with specialist training.

How much does a PCR test coast?

The standard PCR test with test report costs €35 (incl. Influenza €45), the Rapid Test €49 (incl. Influenza €59) and the Ultra Fast Lane option with test report costs €89 (incl. Influenza €99). Medical certificates can be ordered for an additional price of  €30.

Questions about the antibody test

What is an antibody test?

An antibody test looks for antibodies (Ab) against the coronavirus, which are present in the body either after coroncavirus infection or after vaccination. An antibody test thus provides information as to whether a coronavirus infection has already been present and whether the body has built up immunity against the infection.

Antibody tests from Trinicum also provide quantitative information about the number of antibodies.

Which antibody test is the right one for me?

We currently offer three options for detecting antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 and thus assessing your level of protection against infections. All three tests meet the relevant WHO standards.

1. Basic antibody test

This antibody test is one of the so-called "mixed tests", meaning that the antibodies are not assigend any classifiation such as IgM or IgG. The test result indicates whether antibodies were detected or not.

The routine Roche ELISA assey antibody test detects antibodies against the spike protein and its receptor-bindung domain (RBD).

In these cases, the neutralising effect is based on an estimate. This means that the level of the actual effectiveness of the antibodies against the virus can vary significantly from the laboratory result. This test is suitable for determining whether there ist a general immune effect and is also used for a more general assessment of the antibody effect, including in regard to the "3G rule".

Cost inc. blood sample: 52 euros

2. Gold standard: Surrogate antibody test

Thanks to our exclusive cooperation agreement with the Centre for Virology at the Medical University of Vienna, we are the only provider in Austria able to carry out the surrogate antibody test. This analysis method from the Centre for Virology at the Medical University of Vienna represents the current gold standard for determining the actual neutralising effect of antibodies against the virus.

As the successor to the neutralisation test, it is currently the most accurate method for determining the degree of protection after infection and/or vaccination. The test involves looking for the specific antibodies that actually work to neutralise the virus (neutralising antibodies). Based on the latest research, this test represents the best method of assessing the activity of the immune cells.

The value is given as a percentage rate of neutralisation. An ELISA test is also automatically carried out as part of this test (the values are given in BAU/ml -Binding Antibody Units/millilitre). This test is suitable for determining how great the protective effect against re-infection actually is, including in regard to the “3G rule”.

WHO standard test report.

Cost inc. blood sample: €88

In cases of special concerns (immunsuppression etc.) we offer special tests to provide information about your immune status in cooperation with the Centre for Virology at the Medical Universität of Vienna. Please contact us should you have any questions or special requests:  office[ät]trinicum.com

3. SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid antibody test

This test provides evidence of antibodies against the viral envelope of the virus, which are only formed after an infection has already passed, but not after vaccination. The SARS-CoV-2 Nucleocapsid antibody test can be used to test for an infection which has passed unnoticed.

Cost inc. blood sample:  €40

The blood samples are taken at the Trinicum medical centre:
Schwarzenbergplatz 6, enter via Zaunergasse 1-3
