Advantages of COVID-19 rapid antigen tests

The rapid test is recommended not only because of the quick analysis of the test results, but also because of its high sensitivity and specificity. This means that the test results are very exact and have a very low rate of false results.

The rapid antigen test does not need to be analysed in a laboratory, as the analysis can be carried out using the test strip immediately after the sample has been taken. This therefore frees up laboratory capacity and eliminates waiting times for laboratory results. In addition, the rapid antigen test is considerably cheaper than a PCR test.

How does an antigen test work?

During the antigen test, just like the PCR test, a swab is taken from the nose and throat. The sample taken is then brought into contact with a test liquid. The test liquid contains specific antibodies that are marked with a coloured molecule. If the sample taken contains any coronaviruses, the antibodies from the test bind to the antigens. This causes the test area to change colour (just like a pregnancy test).

The antigen test detects specific antigens and searches for the characteristic structure found on the surface of the virus within the sample taken. In the case of COVID-19 it is the spike protein that is targeted. The virus is able to enter human cells using this protein.

When are antigen tests the best option?

Antigen tests are suitable for finding so-called superspreaders. Superspreaders are people with a high viral load of coronavirus. In these cases, the antigen tests show a high level of sensitivity.

This means that for any 100 persons with a high viral load (ct < 30), about 98 of the antigen tests will give a positive result. In the case of positive antigen tests, we recommend a subsequent PCR test to corroborate the result.

Any spread of the coronavirus can thus be contained quickly and easily, at events or during structured group tests, for instance. Nonetheless, the coronavirus safety measures (such as social distancing, hand hygiene, wearing a face mask and regular ventilation of enclosed rooms) should also be applied.

For those who suspect they may have coronavirus and people displaying COVID-19 symptoms we advise a PCR test or home PCR self-test
